How to modify multiple pictures?

There's more than likely plug-ins to do that but it's impossible to do with the stand alone Gimp
Is there any way that I can modify more than 1 picture at a time? For example, I want to add the "cartoon" effect to about 1000 pictures (to add the effect, I normally go to "Filters", then click on "Artistic", then "Cartoon" and it changes the picture into a cartoon appearance after I confirm it). So whats the easiest way to do this in Gimp, or if you know of any other freeware programs that can do this, let me know.
